climbed onboard a navy ship today. >>> later, helping victims of domestic violence. the event going >>> look up in the skies this afternoon over the bay and you might spot the blue angels. this is a live picture of the amphibious assault ship docked along the embarcadero in san francisco where the mayor officially welcomed the navy's arrival where amy hollyfield joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. fleet week is about the blue angels, let's be honest the highlight. local officials want you to know that fleet week is more than just an air show. they say step onboard the uss macon island to learn more. this floating city was too busy to visit san francisco during fleet week last year the crew was preparing for a long deployment. but it is back. and the crew is ready to give you a tour. >> it is interesting to see people are great to meet. definitely come out. >> reporter: local dignataries and emergency workers climbed onboard today to meet with military leaders. they are focused on how they will work with the mill -- military if in is a disaster and we help. >> they are experts

more than a million extra people this week for large scale events, including fleet week. navy and marines are on ocean beep right now. amy hollyfield is there live to explain -- beach right now. amy hollyfield is there live to explain why. >> reporter: they were dazzling everyone they showed off one of their cool tools and a few others to get fleet week kicked off. some call this is an engineering marvel. the size of it and how much it can carry oversea and land on a cushion of air. it impressed san francisco's mayor as it came ashore this morning. >> i'm very surprised at the size of it, the ability to carry emergency equipment from trucks to generators and all the things we might absolutely need. >> reporter: layman's term is hovercraft. navy officials will tell you it is technically called a landing craft air cushion. they brought it here as part of fleet week to showcase the fact that the navy can move combat or humanitarian supplies from a ship to the beach, very quickly. >> it travels at 40, 50 miles an hour on the water. most vessels out here travel 5 to 10 miles. >> report

wraps up today with tours of ships from the navy, coast guard and royal canadian navy. the uss makin island is a helicopter carrier amphibious assault vessel, carries a lot of marines with aircraft and hovercraft so they can get some place in a hurry and bring a lot of firepower with them. >> 4:00 this afternoon, you saw the weekend performances of the blue angels and all that america's cup and hardly strictly bluegrass, all bringing huge crowd s to san francisco. saturday bart had its busiest weekend day with more than 319,000 riders. this being columbus day a lot of kids and parents may head out and catch what is left of fleet week. >> i hope those sailors and marines enjoyed their visit here. >> from the half moon bay pumpkin weigh-off, they are getting to the finals. >> we'll let you know later today who was the big winner [ female announcer ] pillsbury crescents fabulous but...when i add chicken, barbecue sauce... and cheese...and roll it up woo-wee! i've made a barbecue chicken crescent chow down. pillsbury crescents. let the making begin. here's a better idea. pillsbury
